Okay, first of all, I KNOW that I am posting on a Wednesday. But, my friend wanted this posted ASAP, so whatever.

So, today, in English, our assignment was to write a poem in the “mind” of an inanimate object.

Me and my friend decided to have a contest: whoever could write the most depressing/disturbing poem would win. So, we wrote the poems and, after class, asked a few people what they thought, who ended up answering, with different opinions. And then, I (in all my brilliance), came up with the idea to post it on my blog and ask my readers what THEY think. She agreed, so, here are our poems:

Self-Demeaning Piece of Notebook Paper

I hate myself

When the pencil scrapes me, he says

all different things

I am sad,

depressed,

small,

and unworthy

My lines are fading,

and I rough,

not soft

I am a notebook page and,

I hate myself

I hope death will come soon

I will make it happen

I hate myself

The Garden Gnome

Cold as ice and alone as death,

I sit and watch,

watch,

watch

As the frivolous children run around,

I watch,

watch,

watch

I cry out, ashamed,

but it’s always the same

No passersby come or calls out my name

Cold as ice and alone as death,

I sit and watch,

watch,

watch

O.o

Okay… You have to admit, those were both creepy…

If you were terrified or will now have nightmares, SORRY about that…

But, I DID say they were disturbing, so there you go…

Anyways, PLEASEZ and THANKZ vote on which one YOU think is more disturbing/creepy/depressing/gave you more of a chill/whatever, down in the comments below. My friend and I would LOVE to know who’s poem is darker.

PICK ME! PICK ME! Or her… (but which one’s which?…)

Check back Saturday for the results plus a new post!

I think the paper one is more depressing, but the gnome one is creepier…

I think you both should have a little chat with your “feelings” doctors asap. Anyhoo, I happen to be a garden gnome, so really like the gnome pome, gnome pome, gnome pome, gnome pome….;)

  3. twio says:

While the Self-Demeaning Piece is definitely more angry, my vote is for the Gnome. I find the ambiguity of the intent as the Gnome watches enhances its disturbing nature.

  4. You have both outdone yourselves and this is a difficult contest! Well. I think that the paper poem is upsetting because of the urgent suicidal tones. I think that the Gnome poem is disturbing and haunting. They may be equally troubling in different ways.

Both are dismally entertaining. The one about the notebook paper is depressing and angsty, while the gnome poem is disturbing because it’s a bit creepy. Anyhow, your writing is fantastic! Keep up the good work.
